On Sunday morning we all headed back out to the beach to try our hand at digging up some more clams! The weather was much more cooperative, and everyone was dressed appropriately, so we had hopes for great results.
Andy using the clam gun...
Ben and Larry...
Andy looking for a "dimple" in the sand...
False alarm!
Larry was getting a lot of practice using the clam gun, but still no clams!
Maybe the shovel will work better...
We wandered around the beach, searching for those elusive holes in the ground. I've read many times never to turn your back on the ocean, but unfortunately we did and a large wave took us by surprise. Everyone tried to out run it, but my arthritic knee just wouldn't allow me to move fast enough. I thought for sure I was going down when Josh turned to me and took my hand, pulling me to safety! Whew!!!! I was soaked up to my thighs, and the boots I had borrowed from Michelle were full of water, but at least I wasn't face down in the surf! I spent the rest of the clam digging expedition in the front seat of Matt's truck, trying to dry off a bit. Finally the diggers returned, all with their limits once again...
We headed back to the RV, secured Jumbo for the road, and said our good-byes. What a wonderful weekend it had been- not only the digging of the clams, but hanging out with everyone. Nora's family is amazing, and I am forever grateful that Matt is a part of the clan and that Larry & I now have the opportunity to spend time with them as well.
We got ready to roll on down the road towards the Quinalt Beach Casino, where there was free RV parking. We thought that as long as we didn't have to hurry home, we might as well experience the ocean for a couple of more days.
The road approaching the casino - 21 mph? Don't know why they came up with that unusual speed limit.
What a pretty place for an RV park... and it's free! Plus, when we registered, they gave us each $10!!! This was much better than Tulalip or Angel of the Winds, but a little bit far from "home."
Jumbo in his spot. The park was pretty empty, and totally dark and quiet at night. I loved it!
The casino...
There were lots of shore birds having breakfast....
I tried to get some close-ups, but whenever I would get near, a truck would drive by and scare them off!
When I got home, I pulled out my Peterson's Field Guide and tried to identify them.
I'm not sure about the bigger ones - I couldn't see them closely enough to be sure, but the little guys are "peeps" - pretty appropriate for the day after Easter!
Driftwood...
Larry climbed the dunes to get a view of Jumbo from the ocean side...
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, but headed back to Everett the next morning with a Jumbo-load of seawater soaked clothes and sandy socks, and hearts full of memories!
