Squash Blossoms, Rainbow Chard, & Granny Squares

“The earth laughs in flowers.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Yesterday we made a trip to Loew's to buy a chunk of indoor-outdoor carpeting to soften the gravel area in front of Jumbo. The carpet came in numerous colors, but we decided on this nice shade of ivy green -

While we were there, we bought a clay pot and saucer to make a bird bath for our many feathered friends who have been hanging out at the bird feeder. We anchored one of the corners of the carpet with it.

and the other corner with a pot of flowers.

Our obnoxious neighbor, Norm, has a habit of pulling way up under our awning and backing up into his parking place. On occasion when I've been sitting at my computer at our dining area window, I've watched him do this and been afraid that he would not stop soon enough and end up at the table with me. I've been waiting for him to say something about the carpet being in his way, but so far he hasn't mentioned it. Today, however, when he came home he must not have backed up at quite the right angle and almost hit the corner of his trailer. Our carpet wasn't cheap, so  we'd better not be finding any tire tracks running across it as a result of Norm's inadequate parking skills!
After Larry got the carpet laid out, he sat outside and read while I settled into my corner of the sofa and worked on my granny squares. When I get this afghan finished, it's really going to add some color to that old gray driver's seat in Jumbo.

The process of crocheting these little squares is both relaxing and addictive at the same time! Once I get started, I can't seem to stop.

Larry picked some of our Rainbow Chard and I cooked it up for dinner.

It's so beautiful!

I chopped some garlic and sauteed it...

Cut up the chard and added it to the garlic in the pan...

Sauteed it for a few more minutes until it was wilted, popped the cover on and let it be until the rest of the meal was ready.

It was perfectly delicious!

When I woke up this morning, I was delighted to see a blossom in bloom on the zucchini plant!

I just hope the bunnies who live around here don't find it appetizing.

Larry decided to make a hanging basket stand out of the pole of a satellite dish mounted in an old patio umbrella holder. We made a trip to Flower World because, of course, we needed more flowers, not to mention a couple of hanging pots to put them in!

We managed to find a few flowers, but no pots.

So after leaving Flower World, we headed for Fred Meyers in search of pots and more flowers! We found some pots that Larry could drill holes in for hanging, some chain, and a few more flowers and went home to work on our "yard".

I have to stop and mention the fireweed that is blooming so profusely right now. It has always been one of my favorite flowers, but Larry had never heard of it, coming from Texas as he does. Whenever I see a cluster of it along the side of the road, I'm taken back to my childhood.

When we got back home to Jumbo, I noticed a blossom on the snow peas - yay!

and the tomatoes are looking good, although the photo is a bit fuzzy...

Larry started work on the hanging plant stand...

One side done and looking good!

He did a fantastic job of putting the flowers together in a harmonious fashion.

Very pretty!

 Our "front yard" looks beautiful!

The bird bath with some portulaca and hens & chicks.

Now it's time to rest...until the next project!
